We should learn the language

We decided that we should have a basic grasp of the language prior to our two week tour. With this in mind we bought a French language DVD from eBay.

It arrived in a few days and eager to get started we placed it in the DVD player excitedly, up came the Greetings & Introductions section, the word 'Good afternoon' appeared on the screen accompanied by a voice which said 'Good morning' !!

This did not inspire much confidence if the first words spoken did match the caption (and we hadn't even got to the French yet)

We watched it once or twice, but decided to buy a couple of phrase books instead.

GPRS - GPR What ?

It was decided that we needed a mobile phone that offered GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) so that we could check on Wendy’s orders as well as our e-mails.

We bought a Sony Ericsson T630 from The Carphone Warehouse, managed to get this to communicate with our iPAQ 4150 so that we could at least have limited Internet Access.

What started it ?

We had originally planned to visit a friend (Graham) who was moving to France in June. Unfortunately his departure was delayed due to the sale of his property in the UK falling through. Undeterred we decided to take the trip anyway and undertake a two week tour of the country, boy it's big!
